Underlying Principles of the DECA Program
The DECA Program...
  1. Is Child Centered: This program is appropriate for ALL children. It encourages individualization and goal setting, as well as reflects the relationship between children's development and their behavior.
  1. Is Strength-based: The DECA identifies a child's strengths related to protective factors, while results are used to set goals for each child. This strength-based approach helps early childhood professionals provide positive feedback to families.
  1. Encourages Partnerships Between Teachers and Families: The DECA is completed by both a teacher and parent(s), who then work together as partners to set goals and develop a plan to support the child. The DECA Program was designed with the goal of opening the lines of discussion and encouraging communication between early childhood staff and families.
