Children with Disabilities Now Have More of a Chance to Find Permanent Homes

A new agreement between state agencies seeks to make it more likely for children with disabilities, many of whom had been seen as unadoptable, to join a family for good. The Department of Children and Families, and the Agency for Persons with Disabilities are linking foster children with developmental disabilities such as Autism or cognitive impairment to a Medicaid waiver. Many had been waiting for the program for years. The waiver pays to help a person live at home and can include services such as in-home support, behavioral analysis and respite for caregivers. Lola Gonzalez Laid Herself off to Save Her Employees' Jobs

Lola Gonzalez LaidA recent article of the USA Today website talks about a Devereux Kids employee who placed herself last to help save the jobs of her own employees.

The article states,: Like countless small-business owners, Lola Gonzalez agonizingly resolved to trim her firm's nine-person staff when the economic recovery began to sputter last spring. Unlike other entrepreneurs, she picked an unlikely employee to lay off: herself.

Devereux Florida
Congratulates Our Foster
Youth on their Achievements

The high school years are never easy for a teenager.

Remember what it was like trying to fit in while still being true to yourself? Not to mention how difficult it was to "find yourself." At that time of life, the smallest bumps in the road seemed like astronomical situations you would never get through. Add to the mix a child in foster care and the experience is even more intimidating. Children in foster care struggle with meeting academic challenges while they experience changes in their home environment, often time resulting in living in a variety of different homes during their school years. All youth graduating from high school deserve kudos, but at Devereux, we are especially proud of foster care children who are graduating. Much recognition should be provided to these youth, as well as recognition to their foster families for the care and support they have provided during these times. We are proud of our 2010 graduates and wish them the best in their futures!
