The presence of 24-hour nursing on campus and the high level of physician involvement allow Devereux to monitor and care for clients with a wide variety of medical issues. Our close proximity to two major teaching medical schools also gives us access to medical specialists of all types. Devereux will consider each client on a case-by-case basis.

The Treatment Plan

The team consists of a multi-disciplinary group including a board certified psychiatrist, licensed masters level therapists, nurses, special-education certified teachers, licensed chemical dependency counselor, recreational therapist, unit manager, case coordinator and mental health technicians. Additional team members may join the team as ordered by the psychiatrist (e.g., psychologist, dietician, speech and language pathologist, etc.).

The Program

Under the direction of the unit medical director, Devereux provides a structured, safe and therapeutic milieu utilizing intensive staff support. Though a basic program is in place for each unit, each treatment plan is individualized to meet the client's specific needs. Services available include individual, group and family therapies, therapeutic recreation, chemical dependency groups, community groups and psychodrama.

Therapy groups cover such issues as trauma, social skills, sexual abuse, community, long-term and daily goals. The program utilizes an age-appropriate behavior management level system, which promotes stability, structure, self-control and consistent, positive behavior. The system focuses on positive praise and rewards, combined with logical and non-punitive consequences.

Adolescent Residential Treatment Program

Intensive treatment: This 22-bed program is designed for adolescents ages 13-16 with a history of more acute behavior. Devereux offers a higher staff-to-client ration and more frequent psychiatrist visits than typical residential programs. Nursing care is provided on a 24-hour basis.

Long-term treatment: This 44-bed program provides a safe, structured environment for adolescents ages 13-18 who function at an age-appropriate level of maturity and have been transitioned from a more intensive level of care.

Young Adult Residential Treatment Program

Long-term treatment: This 22-bed program is designed for young adults ages 16-22 who are low functioning but socially capable. The focus of these young adults typically includes basic life skills, independent living skills, education often through the GED preparation program and the pre-vocational program.

The Educational Component

The educational component is fully integrated into each client's individual treatment plan. All clients attend school with a certified special education teacher who has been trained to work with students with emotional and/or learning difficulties. Along with the academic program, all clients may participate in the prevocational program.
