What's Happening at Devereux California … June 2018

In October 2013, Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 468 establishing the Self-Determination Program into law. This law will provide individuals served by the Tri-Counties Regional Center (TCRC), and their families, more freedom, control and responsibility in selecting services and supports to help them meet set goals in their individual program plans (IPP).

California’s Department of Developmental Services (DDS) submitted the required application to the Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2014 but, due to the number of questions from CMS, the application will be re-submitted. When this occurs, the 90-day timeline begins again.

The Self-Determination Program allows for person-centered planning, and is based on the following five principles:

  1. Freedom - to plan a good life and have the same rights as everyone
  2. Authority - to decide how their budget is spent
  3. Support - to choose their own paid and unpaid services
  4. Responsibility - to be accountable for their own budget and funds
  5. Confirmation - to play a critical role and make decisions for their lives

Bottom line: The program allows for more freedom and flexibility. Individuals may purchase any services, not just those available through the regional center. In addition, individuals can control their own budgets and purchase services and supports that align with their individual goals.

Currently, 16 individuals in California are participating in the pilot program . To be eligible to participate in the program, the individual must be receiving, or eligible to receive, services from the regional center. Once the application is approved, DDS will select 114 individuals from the Regional Center to participate. Individuals who are interested will be required to attend an informational meeting about the program. For more in-depth information, please visit Tri-Counties Regional Center.

Sincerely,

Devereux California Awarded $2,500 Grant from the Chumash Indians Foundation

chumash.pngWe are excited to announce that Devereux California was recently awarded a $2,500 grant from the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Foundation.

Funding will be used to support Devereux California’s Supported Living Services program (SLS), which provides assistance to adults with disabilities who wish to live in their own homes. We work with a wide range of individuals, from those who need only minimal support to those who need 24-hour care. Individuals who participate in this program have the opportunity to choose who they live with and where they live. Our team helps these adults build relationships in the community; develops inclusion practices; and assists adults in meeting their daily living needs. Our goal: Help individuals live successfully within their communities and be as independent as possible. Click here to learn more about our community living programs.

Devereux California Greenhouse Participated in the ‘2018 Buddy Walk’

Chris Niro
, direct support staff for Devereux California’s Greenhouse, and Wendy Cooper, manager of external relations, recently participated in this year’s “Buddy Walk.”

The fundraising/awareness event – hosted by the Downs Syndrome Association and chaired by Melissa Fitch (former Devereux California Advisory Board member) – included a fun-filled afternoon featuring music, games, activities and food on the grounds of Chase Palm Park in Santa Barbara.

At the Greenhouse booth, participants planted cuttings from succulents – grown in our greenhouse – that they could take home to nurture and grow.
