What's Happening at Devereux California … March 2018

A note from our Executive Director Amy Evans

As we spring forward into March, I wanted to share some news on the legislative front.

Since 1998, Devereux California’s reimbursement rates from the state – for providing assistance to the individuals we serve – have been frozen with no significant increases to offset the operating costs required to provide these services.

In an effort to increase this support and funding, Assemblymember Chris Holden (District 41) sent a letter to the California Legislature Budget Committee to shed some light on this issue. The letter, dated Jan. 9, 2018, requests bridge funding in the amount of $25 million for the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) to maintain these critical services, pending the finalization of a DDS rate study DDS that is scheduled for completion in March 2019. The letter addresses the critical need for rate increases and the struggle providers are facing to keep these services available.

Holden asked for complete funding reform to “help preserve essential services and maintain critical relationships that service providers have with the people they serve.”

The support from Assemblymember Holden is wonderful – and we need your support, as well. This much-needed funding will go a long way, as Devereux California continues to face increasing costs while maintaining the highest quality services and supports. On behalf of our staff and the individuals we serve, I encourage you to call, or write your legislature in support of this letter.

Thank you for your support!

Devereux California Receives $3,000 Grant from the Santa Barbara Foundation

We are excited to announce that Devereux California was awarded a $3,000 grant from the Santa Barbara Foundation to help boost its programs for seniors.

The Senior Programs of Santa Barbara Committee Advised Fund – through the Santa Barbara Foundation – provides grants to nonprofit organizations in Santa Barbara, Goleta and Carpinteria that address the needs of senior citizens living in these areas.

The donation will support required staff training for the organization’s Weisman Center for the Elderly. This center was upgraded to a “Specialized Residential Care Facility for the Elderly,” which supports the provision of more intensive medical and palliative care to seniors with serious conditions such as cardiac and respiratory disease, diabetes, impaired mobility, sensory disabilities, and multiple physical disorders, as well as intellectual disabilities and behavioral disorders.

Join us for a Community Fundraiser – Sharky’s Woodfired Mexican Grill – April 9-10

Enjoy a meal at Sharky’s Woodfired Mexican Grill in Goleta on April 9 and/or 10, and 20 percent of the cost of your meal will be donated to Devereux California! When you order, just mention that you are there to support Devereux. Follow us on Facebook.
