What's Happening at Devereux California … February 2018

Devereux California Holds Founder’s Day Celebration

On February 2, Devereux California’s Adult Day Program hosted a Founder’s Day celebration to honor the legacy of our organization’s founder – Miss Helena T. Devereux.

The event began with staff and individuals paying tribute to Miss Devereux’s contribution to the field of behavioral health and sharing memories about the past. As Devereux California was the second of 13 centers to open in 1945 – with the help of former Devereux Trustee Max Factor – several of our individuals knew and worked with Miss Devereux.

The program culminated with a candle lighting ceremony and songs performed by our individuals, highlighting our center’s values and recognizing Miss Devereux’s pioneering spirit.

A Great Way to Give Back: Volunteer!

Serving on a committee is a fun way to support Devereux California that has many rewards.

If you are interested in volunteering on one of the committees of our Board of Advisors – such as the fundraising committee or the advocacy committee – please contact Manager of External Affairs Wendy Cooper at wcooper2@devereux.org.

Welcome to New Staff Members

Katie Hughes, MSW: Clinical Case Manager for Weisman Center for the Elderly

Katie has been named clinical case manager for Weisman Center for the Elderly – a home for adults with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences who also have medically fragile conditions. She takes on this role as Sherry Davis prepares to transfer to our Human Resources team. Previously, Katie held the positions of case manager for seniors with behavioral health differences and medical social worker serving individuals with significant medical issues. Katie holds a master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California with a concentration in the health of older adults.

We also welcome Pema Yangchen Nymeyer, LPN, to our nursing staff for our Weisman Center for the Elderly.

Recognizing Employees Following Recent Natural Disasters

Devereux California recognized several team members for going above and beyond during the recent natural disasters in our community. Although none of our individuals were directly impacted by the fires and mudslides in Santa Barbara County, many of our staff went the extra mile to ensure that all shifts were covered.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the following individuals who made sure their first priority was caring for our individuals.

Thank you to our Devereux families, individuals, staff, Advisory Board members, donors and all those who make it possible to continue the mission of our founder – Helena Devereux.
