What's Happening at Devereux California … January 2018

A note from our Executive Director Amy Evans

We have many heroes at Devereux California, and I would like to thank just a few as I reflect on the events of the past fiscal year.

First, I want to take a moment to share our thoughts about the losses suffered by our community in the recent Thomas Fire and the subsequent rain storms and mudslides in Montecito. We are devastated by these tragic events, the loss of lives and the destruction in our community. Several of our staff and Advisory Board members were impacted directly by these catastrophes and, because Santa Barbara is such a small community, we all know someone who has suffered a loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been impacted, and we extend our enormous gratitude to emergency first responders who have worked so hard to save lives and prevent further loss.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation to our dedicated direct support personnel here at Devereux California, many of whom were personally affected by the fires and mudslides. In addition, many team members have worked long hours as a result of their peers being out because of these natural disasters. This experience, while extremely heartbreaking, frustrating and tragic has, once again, given me an opportunity to see how our outstanding team comes together in times of need to continue providing the highest quality care to the individuals we support every day.

I also would like to say how grateful I am to Devereux California’s friends and supporters for their ongoing commitment and dedication. We received several gifts at the end of the year, all of which make a significant and meaningful impact for our organization and the individuals we serve. Thank you.

Finally, I want to thank our Advisory Board for their continued service in 2018 (the 2018 roster is below), and to all of the businesses and foundations that supported Devereux California’s events, programs and fundraisers this past year. Your generosity and support is truly inspiring. As we march forward into 2018, I hope you will join me in our continued mission of unlocking human potential for people living with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences. It takes a village to ensure that our individuals some of the most vulnerable members of our society have the highest-caliber programs, services and care, and you are all helping us achieve this goal.

We will continue to announce our events via this newsletter in 2018. If you would like to be included on our community mailing list, please e-mail External Affairs Manager Wendy Cooper at wcooper2@devereux.org. I wish you all success, wellbeing and happiness in 2018

Sincerely,

Amy Evans
Executive Director – Devereux California

Program Spotlight: Disaster Emergency Response Team

In recent months, due to the Whittier and Thomas Fires and the subsequent mud slides, Devereux’s Disaster Emergency Response Team (DERT) has been very active ensuring the safety of the individuals in our care. When a natural disaster, such as a fire, threatens our community, this team of staff members organizes to perform a strict protocol of safety measures and reporting to ensure that our individuals and staff are accounted for, and safely evacuated, if necessary. We also have relationships with other agencies and safety groups in our community to provide support during these stressful times, when needed.

How You Can Help …

Devereux California serves more than 90 individuals in its residential facilities, and their own homes, throughout the Santa Barbara community – and that number continues to grow. Thank you to our Devereux families, individuals, staff, Advisory Board members, donors and all those who make it possible to continue the mission of our founder – Helena Devereux.
