What's Happening at Devereux California … December 2017

A note from our Executive Director Amy Evans

As we approach the end of 2017, I want to thank the members of our Advisory Board and all of our donors and volunteers who have supported Devereux California this year. The last 12 months have been exciting, and we have experienced many successes, such as increasing and changing our service lines to reach more individuals in our community, and holding our first Art & Soul fundraiser hosted by our Board. We also tackled ongoing challenges, such as inadequate rates in our system.

As I write this note, the Thomas Fire – the fourth largest wildfire in California’s history – continues to bring catastrophic loss to our surrounding communities. But through the devastation and sadness, I am also seeing how this tragedy is bringing both our Devereux family – and the larger Santa Barbara community – closer than ever before. We are incredibly grateful to our dedicated staff who are working tirelessly to ensure that the safety of our individuals remains top priority, even though many of our team members have been impacted personally by the fires. We are also grateful for the ongoing support of our corporate offices who offer help and support in many ways behind the scenes.

It takes a village, and every contribution makes a difference. With your help, Devereux California continues to provide excellent care to many of the most vulnerable members of our community.

I ask that you consider making a year-end gift to support Devereux California – to help us continue our mission of unlocking human potential, and providing services and programs that provide opportunities for people with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences to thrive in their communities and lead productive and socially-connected lives.

Online donations can be made via our secure online donation form. Click here.

Thank you so much for being part of this amazing journey with us.

Happy holidays – we look forward to a fantastic new year!

Devereux California Hosts Holiday Party for Our Individuals

On December 14, Devereux California hosted holiday parties for the individuals in our care at our residences. We extend our gratitude to Pat Kistler, Arlene Norcutt and other anonymous donors who contributed to these events. As a result of the Thomas Fire, we needed to cancel our event at the Goleta Valley Community Center, but we would still like to thank those who offered donations for the event, such as Woodstock’s Pizza, McDonald’s Camino Real and Claudia Orona.

Seeking Donations for Our Staff Party

On January 19, Devereux California will host an appreciation party for our amazing team members. We are seeking donations for raffle prizes for our direct care staff. Raffle prizes could include gift cards from retailers such as movie theaters, coffee houses, restaurants and grocery stores.

If you would like to donate, please contact Cindi Thompson at cthomps5@devereux.org.

Congratulations to Sherri Godfrey Culture of Caring Award Winner

Devereux California recently selected Sherri Godfrey as the recipient of the 2017 Thomas Donovan Culture of Caring award. The award honors direct care staff whose performance embodies the qualities espoused by former Devereux trustee, friend and benefactor Thomas Donovan.

Sherri has worked at Devereux for approximately two years as a direct care professional at our North County location in Lompoc, Calif., providing support to individuals in their own homes. Sherri’s contribution to the North County team has been invaluable. She is engaged, communicative and respectful, and regularly goes above and beyond without seeking recognition. Sherri also has a great deal of knowledge about the individuals she serves, and is able to assist her peers when her supervisor is not immediately available. Sherri is admired greatly by both our individuals and staff, and her enthusiasm is admirable. She always has an upbeat and positive attitude that is infectious to the rest of the North County Lompoc team.

Sherri’s supervisor, Evan Tambini, states, “I know without fail that I can always count on Sherri to get things done quickly and well. She always upholds Devereux values and works with integrity; she is a pleasure to work with and an excellent example of and for Devereux staff.”

Thank you to our Devereux families, individuals, staff, Advisory Board members, donors and all those who make it possible to continue the mission of our founder Helena T. Devereux.
