Diagnostic Services for Autism Spectrum Disorders

Devereux offers comprehensive diagnostic services for individuals who may have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Through short-term (60 - 90 day) placements in either our Therapeutic Day School or West Meadow Residential Program, an accurate assessment is developed for each individual student.

Safe, Structured Environment

The Therapeutic Day School and West Meadow Residential programs are specifically tailored for individuals who present symptoms consistent with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Throughout the diagnostic assessment period, students are taught and cared for in a safe, structured environment that ensures their well-being while enabling our professionals to adequately assess behavior.

Evidence-based Evaluation

An evidenced-based evaluation of ASD behaviors and symptoms is developed by our multi-disciplinary treatment team consisting of:

  • Clinical Psychologists
  • Board Certified Behavior Analysts
  • Psychiatrist
  • Nurses
  • Clinicians
  • Educational Staff
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Speech and Language Pathologist

Diagnostic Components and Services

To maintain the gold standard for the assessment of ASD, diagnostic components typically include a clinical interview with the family and/or previous treatment providers, review of relevant records, psychiatric assessment and medication evaluation, and functional behavior assessment. More specifically, the ASD diagnostic placement may include the following services:

ASD Specific Assessment Measures:

  • Autism Disorder Observation Schedule (ADOS)
  • Autism Diagnostic Interview Revised (ADI-R)
  • Gilliam Asperger’s Disorder Scale (GADS)

Evaluation of Adaptive Functioning:

  • Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales Second Edition (Vineland-II)
  • Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills Revised (ABLLS-R)
  • Adaptive Behavior Assessment System Second Edition (ABAS-II)

Cognitive and Executive Functioning:

  • Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV)
  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Fourth Edition (WISC-IV)
  • Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning (BRIEF)

Social Functioning:

  • Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ)
  • Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS)

Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA):

  • A systematic assessment of student behavior, with a focus on resolving behavioral issues that if not adequately addressed may place a child at-risk for requiring a higher level of care
  • Includes the assessment of environmental factors, including immediate antecedents, consequences, and setting events, and the impact of these factors on behavior
  • Provides an understanding of the function of behavior and specific recommendations stemming from this understanding that can generalize to the home, school, and/or community
  • Specific components include direct observation, interviews, record review and systematic data collection
  • Observations, record review, data collection systems, analysis, and recommendations are provided by a doctoral level Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA-D)

Results and Recommendations

At the conclusion of the placement, a multi-disciplinary team meeting will discuss results and provide individualized recommendations.
