Devereux Kanner - Programs & Services
Overview

Devereux Kanner's programs provide a continuum of care to children, adolescents and young adults who are diagnosed as developmentally disabled and/or dually diagnosed, with Severe Mental Retardation to Borderline intellectual functioning, and have moderate to severe emotional disturbances or Autism.

Devereux Kanner's programs teach skills that improve social behaviors and promote the development of individual self-esteem. Kanner's positive program model is based on providing a highly structured environment through a cognitive/behavioral approach. By assessing an individual's challenging behaviors and then systemically teaching replacement behaviors, students are able to learn new strategies for life. A positive programming approach emphasizes skills teaching.

Self esteem is built through the successes that an individual experiences in their life. Kanner Treatment Teams set obtainable goals for each child, so success can be achieved. Students have the opportunity to choose from a large menu of activities. Having the option to select a rewarding activity encourages participation and builds a sense of independence. We provide opportunities for learning communication skills, independent living skills, social and leisure skills, and community-access training. Individual, group and family therapy is provided as indicated. Programs are designed to help students develop age-appropriate behaviors.

Kanner programs provide training in the following areas:
  • Behavioral Control & Anger Management
  • Problem Solving Techniques
  • Self Advocacy
  • Interpersonal Relationships
  • Social Skills & Self-Awareness
  • Health Education
  • Self-Care & Hygiene
  • Recreational & Leisure Skill Building
  • Community Safety
  • Community Access Training
  • Household Management
  • Money Management
  • Vocational Skills
Program Summaries

Devereux Kanner offers a variety of programs in three broad areas to most effectively meet the needs of our young people.

Kanner Residential Programs
Kanner's residential programs are designed for children and adolescents from 6 to 17 years upon admission. The primary goal of the programs is to maximize the independent functioning of each student to the highest level possible. Residential settings include on-campus residences, off-campus homes and intensive foster care. Each setting consists of a continuum of programs distinguished by age, gender and ability levels.
Kanner Specialty Programs
Kanner's specialty programs include:
  1. Sexual Responsibility Program is a residential treatment for boys, ages 12 to 17 with sexual disorders and cognitive impairments, mental retardation or dual diagnoses (MH/MR).

  2. Family Based Treatment Program is an intensive foster care program which provides treatment and support services in a family setting for students who have emotional/ behavioral disorders, mental retardation, or dual diagnosis. Serving as primary therapists, the parents teach alternate behaviors and adaptive skills for daily living.

  3. Respite Care is available on and off campus on a case by case basis.

  4. Wraparound Services at the Devereux Whitlock Center provides services to MH and MR children and adolescents within Pennsylvania's Delaware and Chester Counties. Referrals can be made to (610) 251-2082.
