In an effort to minimize disruptions in the building, CARES limits touring to the first Thursday of every month, commencing at 10:30 am. Tours last about 1.5 hours and include program observation and a question/answer period. In addition, there is typically time left for an open discussion. Tour groups are limited to 10 participants and are scheduled on a first come first serve basis. Tours are scheduled with CARES administrative assistant at (610) 873-4930.
6. Does CARES have a waiting list?
CARES has 2 types of waiting lists; pre-screening and post-screening. Children placed on the pre-screening waiting list have a completed referral packet and will be screened when an appropriate opening (classroom vacancy) is available. Children on the post-screening waiting list will begin CARES once all enrollment pre-requisites are satisfied (a CARES IEP, approved PDE form 4010, records of immunization, identification and training of an appropriate staff to accommodate the increased census).
7. Does Kanner CARES only accept high functioning children?
CARES provides services to children across the autism spectrum. CARES has students with extremely challenging behaviors and medical issues (seizure disorders, hearing & vision impairment), as well.
8. When does CARES plan on serving children younger the 4 years 6 months and older than 8 years?
CARES is currently exploring the possibility of opening a pre-school classroom. At this time, pre-school is only in the very preliminary stages of consideration (due to licensure, physical plant, etc). As CARES students get older, if it is not appropriate to transition them elsewhere, we will create subsequent program components to address the need of the current census. At this time, CARES does not intend to enroll students over the age of 8 years.
9. How do I refer someone I care about to Kanner?
Prospective applicants are carefully evaluated by a multi-disciplinary team to determine if our programs are appropriate for the applicant's needs. This team approach is used to address all aspects of residential, educational, vocational and community support services for the people we serve.

The evaluation process begins with a paperwork screening. We need the following information to help determine the applicant's compatibility with Kanner's services:

  • Psychiatric Evaluation (within the last three years)
  • Individual Education Plan (IEP) and educational reports
  • Medical History & Reports
  • Record of Placement & Treatment History
  • Psychological Evaluation and/or Adaptive Scales
A Devereux Admission Representative will contact you within 48 hours upon receiving your referral and advise you on the status of the referral. They may accept the person immediately, ask for clarification on questions that arise from the paperwork screening or set up an individual evaluation meeting.

If an evaluation is indicated, they will assist you in scheduling an appointment. An on-site evaluation will give you and your applicant an opportunity to see the program and meet with professional staff. If no further questions or evaluations are necessary, an Admission representative will contact you to discuss the results of the evaluation. If we can provide appropriate services for your applicant, funding confirmation and admission dates can be finalized at that time.
10.
