Professional Psychology Traineeship and Externship Programs
We welcome applications through the deadline of February 1st.

The full-time, 12-month Professional Psychology Traineeship and Externship experiential learning programs are intended for recent college graduates who are considering graduate study in psychology or a related behavioral healthcare field. The program provides a supervised learning experience combining didactic and hands-on training. A major goal of the programs is to expose trainees and externs to the variety of roles and functions of practicing professional psychologists and thereby enable them to consolidate and refine their career goals before making an informed decision to enter professional psychology as a career.

In keeping with the scientist-practitioner model of professional psychology, the Traineeship Program emphasizes training in both applied research and psychological service provision. Trainees split time between developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based practices to support client and community mental health and positive development with experiential involvement in both prevention and clinical intervention initiatives. The Externship Program provides an opportunity to work directly with clients at a Devereux treatment center 4.5 days a week in support of their treatment goals. Both the trainees and externs participate in seminars for the remaining ? day each week.
Location
Greater Philadelphia, PA
Number of Positions
Between four and eight traineeship and externship positions are planned for the 2010-2011 training year.
Program Description
Training Sites
Professional Psychology Trainees and Externs are appointed by the Devereux Center for Resilient Children, and the program partners with Devereux treatment centers and community partners as sites for psychological service provision. Trainees are likely to spend 2 days a week at a site providing direct services while Externs are likely to spend 4.5 days a week doing so. Trainees have more involvement in research projects than externs.
Qualifications
Applicants for the traineeship and externship programs must have their bachelor’s degree prior to the start of employment, and be at least 21 years of age. Academic training in psychology is required. Knowledge of statistics and research methodology, as well as previous experience in the human services field, is preferred. Preference is given to applicants who plan to attend graduate school.
Stipend
The Traineeship and externship stipend is $692.50/bi-weekly. Generous benefits include medical insurance, nineteen days of paid vacation/holiday time, four days with pay for graduate school interviews, and up to eight paid sick days during the year. Trainees and externs are expected to provide their own transportation and housing.
