Devereux Student Strengths Assessment
The Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA; LeBuffe, Shapiro, & Naglieri, 2009) is a nationally-normed (n = 2,500) behavior rating scale that assesses social-emotional competencies of children in grades K-8. Completed by parents, teachers, or after-school staff, the 72 strength-based items comprise eight scales: Personal Responsibility, Optimistic Thinking, Goal-Directed Behavior, Social Awareness, Decision Making, Relationship Skills, Self-Awareness, and Self-Management. The DESSA can be used to:
- Identify social-emotional strengths and needs of elementary and middle school children.
- Produce classroom profiles that guide universal prevention strategies.
- Identify at-risk children who have specific social-emotional needs.
- Produce individual student profiles that guide targeted prevention strategies.
- For special education students, identify important strengths that can be incorporated into IEPs.
- Evaluate social-emotional learning outcomes at the child, class, grade, school and district level.
Advanced interpretation techniques facilitate parent-teacher collaboration, assist in developing specific, behaviorally-based intervention plans, and provide practice-based evidence of social-emotional competency acquisition. A web-based administration, scoring and reporting program is available. A Spanish version of the DESSA as well as a youth self-report are in development.
