Advisory Board News

We are proud to welcome our newest Advisory Board member, Donna Krueger, owner of dk Gallery located on the Marietta Square in Marietta, GA. A thirty-one year resident of Georgia, Donna is originally from Elmhurst, Illinois. She has always been inspired and carried away by art, leading her to open dk Gallery in 2008. The gallery has generated excitement with their dynamic show openings and powerful, yet accessible contemporary art. dk Gallery features over 35 emerging and established contemporary artists. In 2018, dk Gallery was named Best Gallery in Atlanta by Jezebel magazine.

Donna earned her B.S. degree in Marketing from the University of Illinois. She worked in the advertising agency world for more than twenty years on the account management side. Donna and her husband Kerry reside in Marietta. They are blessed with two married children and now delight in the joy of three grandchildren.

Donna and dk Gallery are committed to embracing non-profit organizations that make a difference in our community. We are honored that Donna has chosen to serve Devereux!

Campus News and Events

On May 23, Devereux celebrated the graduation of three high school students from Devereux Georgia’s Ackerman Academy. Each graduate spoke to their fellow students sharing their advice, mottos, and gratitude. We are incredibly proud of our graduates and cannot wait to learn what their future holds!

For six weeks, many of our commercially sexually exploited (CSEC) clients worked with Shannon Turner of StoryMuse. StoryMuse provides unique strategies for personal, business, organizational, and community development through reality storytelling and theatre techniques everywhere it is needed. During the pilot project, clients learned to tell their truth and share their vulnerability through the empowering process of storytelling.

In their recent final program, clients shared impactful stories and moving "best lines" from those stories.

-"I was tired of lying."

-"It was supposed to be a good day."

-"Most kids say: my father, my auntie, my mom...I say: my caseworker, my FBI agent, my probation officer."

-"This was the dawn of my exploitation."

-"He hugged me so hard it took my breath away."

-"I'm still waking up from that nightmare."

The Georgia District Region 3 Civitan Clubs (Chattahoochee, East Cobb, Marietta, and North Cobb) chose Ackerman Academy Principal, Sherry McKenzie as a finalist for their annual Servant’s Heart Award. The Servant’s Heart Award recognizes outstanding service to individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD). Nominees for the Servant’s Heart Award can be teachers, therapists, vocational educators, social workers or others whose excellence in service to citizens with I/DD deserves recognition. Ms. McKenzie was chosen as one of three finalists and was honored at the June 14 District Region 3 quarterly meeting.

Throughout Sherry’s career in education, she has helped thousands of children exceed their educational dreams. Each May she hands diplomas to children who never dreamed they would graduate high school. Sherry has a heart dedicated to serving others through education, and she is a true champion for children and young adults. We are grateful and proud to have Sherry McKenzie on the Devereux Georgia team!
