Devereux Florida - Intensive Residential Services
The Viera Campus

The Devereux Florida Viera Campus is located on 55 acres in central Brevard County on the east coast of Florida. The Viera Campus program provides high quality behavioral health services for children and adolescents in a secure, safe residential facility. We specialize in services for children and adolescents with behavioral disorders, as well as those with low cognitive functioning due to neurological, biological and emotional traumas. Programming is individualized and successful in treating children with autism, mental retardation as well as psychiatric disorders and trauma recovery. Programs offered at this site include the Intensive Residential Treatment Program for children and adolescents, a Dual Diagnosis Center for children and adolescents with symptoms of both mental illness and an intellectual/developmental disability, and an on-site accredited school. A large lake for fishing, playing fields, a swimming pool, a large playground, and plenty of palm trees highlight the serene setting.
Intensive Residential Treatment/Specialty Hospital

The Devereux Florida Intensive Residential Treatment Center (IRTC) provides services for children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 17, with various diagnoses such as affective disorders, psychosis, history of abuse and neglect, emotional and psychiatric difficulties. The program is designed for children who have been unsuccessful in a less restrictive residential setting. Young people progress through a positive behavior system assuming a greater responsibility for their own behavior, while acquiring life skills. The IRTC is a locked facility and has the capacity to serve 75 children and adolescents. This program includes the Explorer, Endeavor and Discovery Units.

Dual Diagnosis Center

The Devereux Florida Dual Diagnosis Center (DDC) provides treatment for children with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities. Using a comprehensive approach, this program provides the expertise to serve individuals with a wide range of symptoms and behaviors associated with intellectual delays, who may also suffer from psychiatric disorders. Individuals admitted to this program are assessed for adaptive functioning deficits and placed onto either a locked or unlocked housing unit staffed to address skill acquisition and training needs. The staff on each of the three residential units of this program are uniquely specialized in working with individuals with borderline intellectual functioning through profound mental retardation. Treatment is tailored to each individual, where a highly skilled clinician is assigned to a modest caseload of 6-8 residents to assist all vested parties in incorporating effective therapeutic methodologies into meaningful daily activities. This program includes the Pioneer, Voyager and Odyssey Units.

Educational and Vocational Services

The Devereux IRTC and DDC offers an on-Campus school that is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. All teachers are certified by the state of Florida. The vocational program provides a positive environment where young people can develop skills, behaviors and knowledge essential to the world of work and their independence. The services offered to residents include cosmetology, housekeeping services, clerical skills, print shop and silk screening.

Diabetes Management Program

The Devereux Florida Viera Campus has earned the reputation for being able to work with children and adolescents with very severe behavioral problems, in combination with diabetic health concerns.

Diabetes is an illness characterized by the inability of the person’s body to regulate their blood glucose level. This can result in both physical and behavioral challenges. A youngster with diabetes may exhibit irritability, depression, anxiety, anger and fear, resulting in non-compliance with managing their diabetes. Devereux Florida teaches diabetic children how to take control of their illness. This is accomplished with individual and group teaching concerning diabetes management, as well as assistance with diet and exercise programs. Working one on one, a nurse and dietician teach each child the importance of a healthy diet and how to maintain good nutrition. For example, children may be placed on reducing diets and are taught to count carbohydrates, taught how to recognize the warning signs of high or low blood sugar levels, educated about medications and how they work, and some may be taught how to administer their own insulin injections.

Through the treatment at Devereux Florida, many clients with type 2 diabetes have been able to lose weight and adopt an exercise routine so they no longer require medication.

All teaching is conducted by qualified professionals utilizing materials that are age and developmentally appropriate. Behavioral staff assist in monitoring and encouraging compliance toward diabetic health. Providing medical oversight for this program is John A. Duncan, M.D., a Board Certified Pediatrician and Board Certified Pediatric Endocrinologist.

Devereux School

Children participating in the IRTC and DDC programs attend the Devereux School, an educational program (K-12) located on the Viera Campus property. Unlike most residential treatment centers, the Devereux School is dually accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Florida Council of Independent Schools. The school also includes an excellent Vocational Education and Training component. The Devereux School firmly believes that all students have the ability to achieve academic success. Having each child engaged in the educational process is essential with experiences of success paramount. The program addresses a wide range of children's needs including learning disabilities, truancy, academic weakness, job skill development, speech and language therapy, art, teen pregnancy prevention and athletic programming. The Vocational Education and Training program is designed to provide students, ages 14 or older, with a positive training experience by combining elements of a traditional work environment with the skills needs to become productive and valuable members of society.
Statewide Intensive Psychiatric Program (SIPP)

The Devereux Florida Statewide Intensive Psychiatric Program (SIPP) provides intensive services to children and adolescents (6 through 17 years of age) within a four to six month treatment period. The program format provides a comprehensive therapeutic approach in which service delivery is based on the individual needs of the client and their family. Children and adolescents served by the SIPP have issues relating to emotional, behavioral and psychological problems due to histories of physical abuse and/or sexual abuse, neglect, abandonment, unresolved trauma or psychological conditions that hinder them from functioning in a family environment. This voluntary program requires family participation in the treatment process. This program is located in Orlando and Tallahassee and has the capacity to serve 20 children and adolescents at each location.
