News From Devereux Florida Viera Campus
Good day from the Devereux Florida Viera Campus! I am the Administrator here at the campus and wanted to take the opportunity to share some exciting news with you. For those of you I have yet to meet, I began my career with Devereux here at the campus in 1988 as a direct care staff. Over the years Devereux has given me many opportunities, including earning my Masters degree in Psychology, as well as my national Board Certification as a Behavior Analyst. I have also spent time working with the local school districts and the University of South Florida on the Positive Behavior Change and Positive Behavior Supports initiatives.
The Campus Management Team met recently to share information with each other, and I wanted to take this opportunity to share with all of you:
1. The Devereux Florida Campus School presented at the recent Florida Educational Technology Conference to a standing room only crowd! There were more than 300 participants present and another 100 had to be turned away due to space. Our school is a leader in 20th Century technology! In additional to SMART boards in several classes, we also have two computer labs available to our students. This past Fall the students completed 100% digital Social Studies Fair projects! Each student chose a geographical location, completed their research, and presented a beautiful presentation. Some even had the student's voice narrating the project!
2. We currently have over 30 after school clubs through our Club Advantage program. Every child on campus is involved in at least one club of his/her choosing. Clubs are run by our clinicians, teachers, office staff, direct care staff, program managers, etc. Clubs include Genealogy, Arts and Crafts, Flag Football, Gardening, and many, many more. The Gardening Club is just breaking ground for their very own vegetable and herb garden. Our plan is to use the vegetables and herbs in our cafeteria, as well as hold a Farmer's Market to share with our community.
3. A new therapeutic group rotation is set to begin next week. Groups scheduled for this rotation are: Violence Prevention, Anger Replacement, Psychosexual Education and Trauma, Sexual Education/Males Issues, Sexual Education/Female Issues, Life Skills, and Advanced Life Skills. In addition to these groups, we also offer daily groups for Substance Abuse Education, Substance Abuse Intervention, Relapse Prevention and a weekly 12 Step AA meeting.
These are just a few of the exciting things happening this month at the Viera Campus. I look forward to sharing more news with you over the coming months. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns or suggestions. Thank you in advance for entrusting the care of your children to us. It is an honor to serve their needs.
