SRA

The SRA Direct Instruction is a researched based program designed for students below or at grade level.  The Day School successfully uses SRA to accelerate progress in reading and math, and to close the gap between age and grade level.  The details of our SRA programs are listed below.

SRA

Corrective Reading – Decoding directly addresses all the critical reading components – phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.  Skills are taught through scripted Direct Instruction, requiring intensive interaction between students and teacher, and ensuring immediate and continuous feedback to the teacher.  Skill development is cumulative, with much practice on mastered skills while difficulty is steadily increased over time.

Corrective Reading – Comprehension is used primarily with higher reading middle school students and provides extensive practice on reading carefully and attending to detail.  It also builds vocabulary skills and content knowledge that carries over into the general classroom.  Corrective Reading – Comprehension helps build strategies for retaining information and relating it to new concepts, while developing writing skills and expanding higher order thinking.

Reading Mastery is used primarily with students at or near grade level through sixth grade and consists of three strands – reading and spelling, language arts, and literature.  The reading strand addresses phonemic awareness, phonics and word analysis, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.  The language arts strand helps develop oral and writing communication skills.  The literature strand gives opportunity for increased comprehension and independent reading.

Read to Achieve is used with high school students to help develop greater reading and comprehension skills.  It targets comprehension and word learning strategies that carry over into content area classes, providing age-appropriate text in science and social studies.  Read to Achieve builds reading related peer interaction into every lesson, and takes concrete steps to help students apply comprehension strategies to read text.

Corrective Math is used to fill in gaps or deficiencies in specific math subject areas by utilizing quick, targeted interventions.  Students acquire core skills and build a conceptual foundation for future learning using systematic practice and teacher directed instruction with appropriate levels of support.

Connecting Math Concepts is used primarily with students up through grade eight and teaches relationships between math concepts to build a better overall understanding of math.  It focuses on “big ideas” of math that apply to many situation and concepts, and teaches fewer topics over a longer period of time with the goal of student mastery while using clear strategies that enable students to progressively master more difficult topics.
