Local community shares more than 700 haircuts with children in foster care

Port St. Lucie - More than 700 children in the local foster-care system will receive back-to-school haircuts this fall thanks to Hair Cuttery, the largest family-owned and operated chain of hair salons in the country.

The donation comes through the company's Share A Haircut program, a national campaign that gives one free haircut away for every child's haircut sold from August 1 to August 15.

Devereux Community Based Care will receive about 700 certificates from the local drive, which was hosted at all 16 local Hair Cuttery salons. Those certificates will be distributed to children served by the local dependency system because of abuse, abandonment or neglect.

Since 2003, foster children in Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties have received nearly 4,600 free haircut certificates valued at $59,800.

"We look forward to this every year," said Cami Tatroe, bringing her two children to the Stuart salon for back-to-school trims. "It's fun, it gets my kids involved in helping others, and there's really no reason not to do it because kids need haircuts anyway."
