County management model expands north

Vero Beach – A signature feature of the Devereux Community Based Care management model is about to expand into Indian River County.

Under the model, a county director oversees child-welfare operations at the county level and reports to Devereux Community Based Care's chief executive officer. The director also serves as a support to the county's case-management team and as a liaison to the local community.

"The county director is the face of Devereux Community Based Care in each respective county, serving as the point of contact, developing local relationships, engaging in local community initiatives and networking among local businesses, social groups and government organizations," said Christina Kaiser, community relations director for Devereux Community Based Care.

"The model has been effective in making the child-welfare system more accountable and responsive at its most local level," she said.

For financial reasons, the model has been rolled out gradually over a course of several years, beginning with St. Lucie and then Martin counties.

"We had a plan in place to have a County Director in each of our four counties when we began this journey," CEO Carol Deloach said. "This has taken longer than anticipated but we are now in a position to bring on the third County Director."

Deloach said she expects to have a director in place by mid spring.

Once hired, the director will be based in Indian River County but attend community meetings in Okeechobee County until expansion of the model can be completed.
