Devereux CBC board chair is Champion for Children

Port Saint Lucie – Devereux Community Based Care Board President Steven Murphy was recognized by the Florida Coalition for Children this month for more than 30 years of service to families.

Murphy, who will retire this year, received the coalition’s Champion for Children award during the advocacy group’s annual conference in Orlando.

“Steven Murphy is a leader who embodies the spirit of humility that is needed to accomplish great things – not easy things, but great things,” said Kurt Kelly, coalition chief executive officer. “We recognize him for being instrumental in reshaping Florida’s child welfare system of care.”

Murphy was named Executive Director of Devereux Florida in 2008, joining the Devereux Foundation after his previous position as the founding President and Chief Executive Office for one of the first community-based care lead agencies in the state of Florida.

Community Based Care is the state’s privatization initiative that gave control of the child-welfare system to local communities 15 years ago.

With the goal of advancing Devereux Florida as a premier provider for child welfare services, Mr. Murphy has continually improved the effectiveness and relevance of Devereux's mission and programs to better serve the needs of children, youth and families.

He became the board president of Devereux Community Based Care, when the nonprofit organization was established in 2013 to oversee child-welfare services in Okeechobee and the Treasure Coast.

“Steve has been championing causes for children for more than 40 years,” said Carol Deloach, Devereux CBC chief executive officer. “He is caring, passionate and is always thinking of innovative ways to improve the quality of services children receive.”
