Time to Stuff the Bus for children in foster care

Port St. Lucie – Devereux Community Based Care of Okeechobee and the Treasure Coast invites the community to help "Stuff the Bus" from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 16 at the Port St. Lucie Walmart on US 1.

Stuff the Bus is a longtime partnership between the United Way of St. Lucie County and the local community. It is part of a wider back-to-school project, called School Supplies for Students, which is now in its 20th year.

Devereux CBC is part of the project and operates the Port St. Lucie Walmart site, where volunteers collect paper, pencils, crayons and other school supplies. In return, the United Way gives Devereux CBC school supplies for children in foster care.

"This is an important event for us," said Christina Kaiser, Devereux CBC director of community relations. "We receive the bulk of our school supplies for foster children through this project."

Volunteers are needed at the Devereux CBC site, as well as the other four Walmart sites throughout St. Lucie County.

"Please consider volunteering for this event." Kaiser said. "It's a wonderful way to get the kids involved, and an easy way to earn those community service hours your teens need for high school."

Miracle Thomas, who spent her teen years in foster care and who now works in Devereux CBC's Road to Success program, said she remembers receiving school supplies from the project.

"I was always so grateful to get them," she said. "I'll be out there collecting supplies this year."

Volunteer shifts are available at multiple times and locations at Walmarts throughout St. Lucie County. To register click on the school bus banner on this web page or go directly to the sign-up page.
