Twelve pairs of baby shoes, many memories

Lueckes with Mark Young

Port Saint Lucie – Ann Luecke served for two years as the president of the St. Lucie County Foster Parent Association before handing over the reins to newcomer Mark Young in January.

Her shoes will be hard to fill - she's been bronzing them for seven years.

Mrs. Luecke and her husband, Tim, have been foster parents since 2009, and they have kept mementos of every child brought to them for safety and kindness.

"We saved one pair of bronze baby shoes from each of the precious foster children that have lived with us over the last seven years," Mrs. Luecke said.

"When I am very old, alone, and move to the nursing home, I will take these bronze shoes with me and rejoice in each of the children that filled our home with unconditional love, laughter and joy."

The Lueckes, who continue to serve as foster parents for Devereux Community Based Care, spend much of their time advocating for the children in their home and recruiting new foster parents.

They do that by sharing their own story with anyone who will listen.

"These angels have enhanced our lives more than they will ever know," Mrs. Luecke said. "Everyone asks, 'How do you give them up?' and we say, 'Each spirit is alive in our hearts for eternity, and the memories we created together will be ours and theirs to treasure, always.'"
