Caregiver Spotlight: John and Rachel Andersen – they said, “Yes” to foster parenting

Stuart – Devereux Community Based Care is featuring foster parents throughout the summer as part of its 25 by 25 campaign to raise awareness of the community's ongoing efforts to recruit foster parents. This week, we introduce you to a newly licensed couple dedicated to helping children in foster care: Meet John and Rachel Andersen.

How did you become a foster parent? Our friends are foster parents and they shared their experience with us as we were looking into adoption and fostering. They really encouraged us and helped us along the way. We had the opportunity to take a non-relative placement, and we said, "yes." That placement actually fell through but the experience sealed the deal for us, and we knew we wanted to be available to children in need.

What motivates you? We really enjoy having these kids be a part of our lives. Each case is unique and we have learned so much. Even in the toughest situations, we are just glad to be a part of the journey.

What is your favorite foster-parent memory?  We took in a five-year-old girl, and I was telling her that we had prayed for her and her brother for a long time. She asked, "Because you wanted us?" I said, "Yes," and she just smiled so big at me! She and her brother were our first foster children, and we got to be with him for his first birthday!
