18 children in local foster care are heading to overnight camp next week, thanks to the Florida Wildlife Commission, which received special funding to send 100 children in foster care to the Everglades Youth Conservation Camp.

"Many of these children have limited opportunities for fun," said Christina Kaiser, community relations director for Devereux Community Based Care. "This is exactly the type of thing that childhood is about, and we're thrilled that some of our children in care get to experience it."

Sunday, two vans full of eager children and driven by Devereux CBC support staff will leave St. Lucie County and head south to the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area in western Palm Beach County. Once there, the children will be divided by age into Adventurers, Anglers, Trail Blazers and Paddlers and prepared for a week of canoeing, kayaking, fishing, archery, swimming, hiking and a host of traditional summertime activities.

The residential summer camp is for children in third-through-eighth grade and is designed to challenge camper's physical, mental and social growth. It features a unique conservation education theme with outdoor adventure activities in the Florida Everglades, as well as time to relax, have fun and make new friends.
