Pennsylvania Adult Services receives accreditation for excellence from CARF

Devereux Pennsylvania Adult Services recently received a three-year reaccreditation for excellence for its Brain Injury Program from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Note: This is the second, three-year accreditation the Devereux center has received from CARF. 

According to the reaccreditation notice, CARF stated: “This achievement is an indication of Adult Services’ dedication and commitment to improving the quality of the lives of the individuals they serve.” CARF is an international organization providing accreditation services to health and human service providers. The organization focuses on the highest standards of quality in behavioral health and rehabilitation, among other programs. 

“We are extremely proud to receive this reaccreditation from CARF, as it shows our teams’ level of dedication and commitment to provide only the highest quality services to the individuals we support and care for in our brain injury program,” said Steve Bruce, Executive Director, Devereux Pennsylvania Adult Services.  

The accreditation process

Obtaining accreditation or reaccreditation is a lengthy process that requires the applying organization to conduct a self-evaluation, followed by a visit from a CARF survey team in which they observe programs, interview individuals served and other stakeholders, and review documentation. Organizations receiving accreditation must then submit a quality improvement plan outlining actions that may be taken in response to any areas identified for improvement. In addition, accredited organizations must submit annual reports to CARF, ensuring conformance to the high-quality service standards. 

In Devereux’s case, CARF called out several areas of excellence, including:

• Feedback from family and individuals served about caring staff and a supportive environment;
• The tenure of the staff demonstrating a commitment and loyalty toward the organization and the individuals served; and
• A wide array of regularly scheduled social and community-based activities, as well as vocational opportunities in which individuals actively engage. 

About Devereux’s Brain Injury Program

The goal of Devereux Pennsylvania Adult Services’ Community Living Program for Individuals with Brain Injury (CLIBI) – a residential program -- is to empower each person to discover his or her innate strengths, unique talents and potential to live a meaningful and productive life. The organization achieves this goal by providing a customized plan of support that focuses on the necessary therapeutic and daily supports to help increase the individual’s capacities of self-direction, self-management and potential.
