Devereux Arizona receives $500,000 gift from the Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation

Thanks to the continued generosity from the Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation, Devereux Arizona’s Scottsdale campus has exceeded the halfway point toward funding its $1.25 million capital campaign for a new dormitory that will serve youth with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences.

“The Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation has been an outstanding, long-term supporter of Devereux Arizona, and I am thrilled to announce that the Foundation once again has demonstrated its commitment to the children and adolescents we serve by donating $500,000 to help us renovate our Residential Treatment Center (RTC),” said Devereux Arizona Executive Director Lane Barker. “The Foundation’s gift is the largest on record for Devereux Arizona, and we are so incredibly grateful to the Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation for their friendship and support, and for helping Arizona’s youth.”

Over the years, the Foundation has supported a number of important projects, such as the establishment of the Marley Recreation Center and renovations to the center’s nursing department. In addition, the Foundation has helped boost Devereux Arizona’s foster care recruitment activities and outreach, underwritten marketing videos and a recent administration/program office consolidation.

Upgrading a 25+-year-old dormitory

Devereux’s Residential Treatment Center (RTC) in Scottsdale sits on 10 acres of land donated to the organization in 1967. Built in 1978, the RTC serves youth, ages five to 17, who are experiencing emotional, behavioral, cognitive and/or substance use challenges. The campus is a 24-hour secure facility that includes a therapeutic day school, and is the only facility in the state providing youth under the age of 12 with specialized programing in a safe and therapeutic environment.

Today, two modular dorms – that have reached their lifespan – need to be replaced. The new dorm will replace the existing modular dorms with a 5,000-square foot building and will increase bed capacity, allowing room for 52 youth.

Devereux Arizona is working with Architectural Resource Team and Delta Construction, both Phoenix-based companies, to build the new dormitory. “We broke ground in May 2018, and we expect the new dorm to be completed by the end of this year,” added Barker.
