‘Face-off for Autism’ hockey tournament raises $45,000 for adults with autism

Thirty-two teams hit the ice for the seventh annual “Face-off for Autism” hockey tournament to raise funds for adults living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other disabilities served by Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Pennsylvania – Adult Services.

Approximately 450 people attended the tournament in April at Ice Line in West Chester, Pa. The event, hosted by Shinny USA, raised $45,000 for Devereux Pennsylvania’s Bridge Fund, which helps young adults with ASD and other disabilities bridge the gap between high school graduation and adult programming to ensure there is no lapse in service. The amount raised this year for the Bridge Fund was double the amount raised last year, and organizers hope to continue to build on this momentum moving forward.

“This event gets bigger and better each year, and we are extremely grateful to our players, sponsors and volunteers for helping to make it a huge success,” said Devereux Executive Director of Autism Services and event co-organizer Dr. Todd Harris. “Once again, we had a team comprised of several Devereux employees (Jason Kelley and Zach Sheriko from Devereux Pennsylvania’s Center for Autism Research and Education Services (CARES), including me, as well as two former Philadelphia Flyers players! Many of our participants have played in previous ‘Face-off for Autism’ hockey tournaments, and it is always amazing to see everyone supporting each other – and our cause.”

Funding programs, events and activities

Funds raised for the Bridge Fund will be used to provide individualized services and supports – through Devereux Pennsylvania’s Community Adult Autism Partnership Program (CAAPP) – for adults in Chester, Montgomery and Delaware counties, and contribute to programming for which participants would not otherwise have the funds.

The Bridge Fund also sponsors social events and activities for individuals throughout the year, including sporting events and holiday parties.

“Some of the funds are used for our weekly social groups, as well as larger events,” shared Devereux Pennsylvania CAAPP Program Director Amanda Duffy. “For example, the Bridge Fund allows us to purchase food for our cooking group, books for our book club and art supplies for our new craft group called ‘Crafternoon.’ Last year, we organized our first outing to a Philadelphia Phillies game. About 25 individuals we serve attended with either a guest or staff member, and we arranged for a bus to transport us to the ballpark. Many participants told us that they had never been to an organized sporting event before, and they had a blast!”

Save the date: Tee-off for Autism on September 16

The third annual “Tee-off for Autism” golf tournament – also benefitting Devereux Pennsylvania’s Bridge Fund – will be held on September 16 at Jeffersonville Golf Club in Norristown, Pa. Interested sponsors or participants should contact Dr. Todd Harris or Amanda Duffy.
