Thank you to all of our wonderful Vanguard volunteers!

In recent months, Devereux had the opportunity to host several volunteers from The Vanguard Group, an investment management company headquartered in Malvern, Pennsylvania, with a long history of community involvement. Each Vanguard volunteer displayed a wonderful sense of commitment, energy and community spirit.

On September 27th, separate teams of volunteers joined Devereux staff to coordinate the Fall Festivals at both the Devereux Pennsylvania Adult Services and CIDDS programs. These delightful festivals are an annual tradition, and anticipated every year by individuals served by Devereux, their families and staff. At CIDDS nearly 200 boys and girls played games to win prizes, jumped on the moon bounce, enjoyed face painting, and ate popcorn and water ice. At Adult Services, the festival’s theme this year was “Devereux Reaches around the World.” The global theme highlighted eight countries using costumes, music, and ethnic foods. Everyone had a great time going from booth to booth sampling the various cultural offerings, and dancing with the Philly Phanatic. Both of the festivals were well attended and enjoyed by all.

In the late summer Devereux and Vanguard University’s emerging leaders partnered to launch the first Devereux Pennsylvania skill–based volunteer project initiative, with a focus on the creation of a leadership development program for all Devereux Pennsylvania staff. The Devereux/Vanguard team consisted of eight staff from Devereux and six from Vanguard, with a completion time frame of eight weeks. The Vanguard group grasped some of the complexities of Devereux through discussions on our mission and vision, interviews with center leaders and tours of the three PA campuses. In addition, they did literature reviews, conducted a gap analysis, reviewed best practices, and utilized the Vanguard University faculty for guidance and consultation. The outcomes of this project were the creation of a three-tier structure for a Devereux PA Leadership Development program, leadership competencies and behavioral definition for each competency, and the framework for a talent identification system. Vanguard also extended the offer for future involvement and resources, including courses and adjunct faculty from Vanguard University. Devereux is committed to implementing the Leadership Development program in 2014.

Devereux extends a hearty thank you to all of our wonderful Vanguard volunteers!
