Bike, Bikes, Bikes!

On May 11th, Devereux Kids proudly hosted its first event in Sulphur Springs, collaborating with City of Tampa Parks and Rec, More Health, USF Urban Transportation, RICH House Weed and Seed, McDonalds and the Tampa Police Department.  More Health provided the helmets and the safety classes for both adults and children. TPD sent a bike cop to reinforce safety and helmets. USF provided the lights and license plates, Casper’s Company (McDonalds) provided the lunch and Parks and Rec donated the space. The recipients of the bikes were the kindergarten students attending Parents and Children Advance Together (PCAT), an afterschool literacy program providing one on one tutoring for kindergarten students attending the elementary school. The parent was required to also attend the safety class for their child to receive a bike. Sixty bikes were given to PCAT children and their siblings. All of the bikes were graciously donated to us by God’s Pedal Power Ministries, a non-profit charity that donates bicycles to children and adults in need. The Tampa Tribune attended the event and wrote an article featuring the PCAT program. Martha Guzman, contract manager, also attended the event and the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County was recognized as the funding sponsor of the event for both Devereux Kids and the PCAT program. It was a great time and children were seen riding their bikes (wearing helmets) later that day!
