Three soon-to-be seniors at Villa Maria
Academy High School for Girls completed a week-long internship at
Devereux PA CIDDS center in West Chester. Celine Andrews, Kathryn
Challis and Cassidy Connors completed a forty-hour internship at the
center that provides residential services to children and adolescents
with developmental and behavioral disabilities. The students had an
opportunity to observe psychologists, psychiatrists, teachers,
managers, registered nurses, Direct Support Professionals and others
as they progressed through a week’s worth of activities and
meetings. At the conclusion of the event, each student presented her
view of the experience as well as offer suggestions and ideas for
program enhancement. “I’ve never known doctors, nurses and
others to be so involved in the care of one person. They really know
these kids”, said Kathryn Challis at the end of her second day of
rounds.
Richard Latella, Director of Human
Resources for PA CIDDS, saw this as an opportunity to give the
center’s employees a chance to show off their skills as well as
introduce the concept of careers in social services to high school
students. “We need to plant the seed early: careers in social
services are very rewarding”, said Latella at the event’s
celebration at the end of the week.
