Washington, CT - Volunteer work affords young adults the opportunity to learn and grow through meaningful involvement with others. Students of The Glenholme School are eager to volunteer on campus and in the local community and in late April, they were honored for their regular charitable efforts at Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center (CVHRC).

As a popular evening activity at Glenholme, student-volunteers make regular mid-week visits to the CVHRC in New Milford. They spend quality time with the residents, host Wednesday night BINGO, share their vocal and acting talents, and participate in special events such as holiday sing-alongs and recognition dinners.

At this year’s Volunteers’ Dinner at CVHRC, students and staff of Glenholme joyfully mingled with the residents and staff of the nursing home. All the while, they enjoyed a delightful meal and danced to a deejay spinning classic and current hit songs. Before departing, each volunteer was honored with a certificate commemorating their effort during the year.

Through volunteer work, students of The Glenholme School practice the positive values of caring, respect, responsibility, and community service. Other important benefits include improved social skills, new perspectives, increased self-esteem, a sense of personal achievement, and lasting friendships.

One student passionately noted, “I developed a true appreciation for giving to others and learned how much the residents really enjoy our visits.”
