Interaction
and integration with the community is one of the most effective ways for
individuals with behavioral, emotional and intellectual challenges to practice various
skills as well as gain confidence and pride. These skills provide our individuals a foundation for future happiness
and accomplishment. At Devereux, our children and adults seek happiness by
giving back to the community through many volunteer activities, some of which
are profiled below.
In fall 2011, a walk to cure diabetes was held in Wilmington, Delaware. In keeping with the CBHS Brandywine Program’s Sanctuary Model
Commitment to Promoting Social Responsibility, many of the children and staff
gave of themselves to participate in the walk. There were numerous sponsorships
and donations, and many walkers from both the Brandywine and Mapleton programs
actively participated in the event. The
outpouring of support, due in large part to the spirit and commitment of the
children and adolescents in our programs, resulted in Team KENCANZ being the
largest contingent and was one of only three teams that raised over $10,000 for
juvenile diabetes ($11,317 and counting, to be exact).

very proud of each and every member of Team KENCANZ!

Kanner Learning
Center show their support for the Coatesville
Soup Kitchen and Coatesville Children, Youth and Women’s Alliance by collecting items they may need
including clothing, hangers and shoes.
The CIDDS
Girl Scout Troop has been busy this year. For a service project they donated one half of the money they raised
selling cookies to a local homeless shelter.
Now they are assisting a fellow troop with their Silver Award
project—the design and decoration of banners for the light poles on the CIDDS
campus, ultimately making it a more “kid” friendly area.

Maurice, a gentleman who is part of the Adult Services
family, has been volunteering at the local SPCA. This year he participated in the annual Walk-For
Paws, their yearly fund raising event. On his own, he raised $155 for the charity and was asked to walk one of
the shelter dogs that is up for adoption.
For his efforts he earned the thanks and respect of those with whom he
volunteers and a T-shirt. However, he
decided not to wear it until Monday so he could show everyone at work at The
Shops.

David, an individual from Community Supported Employment,
has begun a book cart program at Bryn
Mawr Terrace, a local assisted living facility. His goal is to help people who
cannot get to the lobby or library easily to access reading materials.

During October 2011, staff and children at CBHS
held a very successful bake sale in recognition of Breast Cancer
Awareness month. All proceeds were
donated to the American Cancer Society—Breast Cancer Foundation.
