Washington, CT - Clad in various hues of green, students of The Glenholme School celebrated St Patrick’s Day on March 15, 2012 with a customary meal of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, Irish soda bread, and dessert. After DJ Elias provided lively Irish music to help the crowd work up a hearty appetite, Mr. McCaughey, an Irish staff member, spoke a few traditional words of thanks. While students and staff enjoyed the feast, they took part in a trivia contest that tested their knowledge of Ireland and the holiday’s history, with everyone learning a great deal from the conversations that ensued.

While it may be a new celebration for Glenholme, St Patrick’s Day has been an official holiday in Ireland for over a century, and in the United States since the mid-1990s. In addition to the US and Ireland, St. Patrick's Day is currently celebrated in Canada, Japan, Singapore, Russia, and Australia. Holiday festivities, such as the St. Patrick’s Day Social, foster a sense of school spirit and community while helping Glenholme students develop an appreciation for other cultures and individuals. At these on-campus social events, students enjoy time with their friends in a fun, safe, and supportive environment.

Thanks to the luck o' the Irish, the first St. Patrick's Day Social was a wonderful success!
