Washington, CT - Volunteer work provides young adults with the opportunity to learn and grow, while enriching the lives of all who are involved. At The Glenholme School, students are eager to give back to others, and regularly volunteer on campus and in the local community.

One popular evening activity among Glenholme students is visiting an elder-care facility. During the regular mid-week excursion to the Candlewood Valley Heath and Rehabilitation Center (CVHRS) in New Milford, students and staff spend quality time with CVHRC residents, host Wednesday night BINGO, share their vocal and acting talents, and partake in special events such as holiday sing-alongs and recognition dinners.

Through volunteer work, Glenholme students practice the positive values of caring, respect, responsibility, and community service. Other important benefits include improved social skills, new perspectives, increased self-esteem, a sense of personal achievement, and lasting friendships. One Glenholme student noted, “You can learn a lot in your classes, but volunteering at the nursing home teaches you about relationships and life in a way that you can’t get from a book.”

The Glenholme School is a therapeutic boarding school for young people who are often considered fragile and complex, diagnosed with Asperger's, ADHD, PDD, OCD, Tourette's, depression, anxiety as well as learning differences. The program provides a treatment milieu designed to build competence socially and academically. Our learning environment supports and enhances the ability for young people with special needs to succeed.
