Washington, CT - Being a leader is an important job for the members of the Student Leadership Conference, SLC, at The Glenholme School. Each year, the SLC commences in June with the mission to instill leadership qualities and effective team-building skills among its members and ultimately for them to positively influence the student body. The members, comprised of a cross-section of the student population, participated in regular meetings, exercises, and special events throughout the year that are designed to improve student awareness and create a positive community environment.

Several key members of the SLC provided a welcoming celebration for nine of the newest members of the Glenholme community. The mid-week gathering was held in the science classroom on March 2, 2011 and included the viewing of an informative DVD created by Leadership II last summer. The DVD was designed to provide an enjoyable means to answer questions a student new to Glenholme might have. This was followed a question and answer session led by the SCL members. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed donuts, hot chocolate and casual conversation.

New students learned about the abundance of opportunities available at Glenholme including activity offerings such as the equestrian program, go-kart track, drama and music, and the culinary program in The Commons; important locations about campus from the Library and the Fitness Center to Nursing and Behavior; as well as the proper use and care of the laptops, along with the token economy, phases and privileges. The newest members of the Glenholme community enjoyed the exchange of information and the comfort of a small group.

Brittany, a student at the school since mid-November, express this well when she said, “It’s nice to feel welcomed and informed. The video was helpful and entertaining and this was a comfortable way to meet others and get to know things.”
