Devereux Celebrates Founder's Day: Nearly 100 Years

Devereux celebrated Founder's Day on February 2nd, the 126th birthday of Devereux Founder, Helena Devereux.
Washington, CT - Devereux Founder, Helena Devereux, was born on February 2nd 126 years ago. Twenty-seven years later, with a two-year college degree and six years of teaching experience in the Philadelphia Public Schools, she began taking children with special needs into her home to help them develop the skills and confidence to lead a full and productive life. With instincts that led her to “positive”, “strength-based” approaches decades ahead of the field, Miss Devereux began to build an incredible organization.

Miss Devereux led our organization for 45 years, through two World Wars and the Great Depression. Despite the enormous challenges over those first 45 years, the organization grew from one employee serving three children to almost 1,000 employees serving about 1,000 children and adults in both Pennsylvania and California. At age 73, Miss Devereux stepped down as Director of The Devereux Foundation. She remained active as a consultant to Devereux until her death, at age 90, in 1975.

As Devereux approaches its 100th anniversary in 2012, with 6,000 employees serving more than 15,000 individuals and families every year, Miss Devereux would be very proud of our commitment to the highest quality services for our clients, our outstanding staff, and the continuing financial strength of the organization she built. It is this special day of February 2nd, when we say thank you to our inspirational founder.

The school’s milieu therapy addresses varying levels of academic, social and special needs development in boys and girls ages 10-18 and postgraduates.
