Washington, CT - The summer at Glenholme is a season of growth and exploration; a time enjoyed fully by the Student Leadership Conference (SLC). Currently in its fourth summer, the SLC kicked off in July with a group of 24 students representing all ages, classes and cottages across campus. The two week-long conferences build school spirit, develop leadership skills for the individual students, and continue to positively enhance the school culture.

A highlight of the July Leadership included a visit from Torrington Mayor Ryan Bingham. A regular visitor to the Glenholme campus, the Mayor spoke of his experiences in a public role and lead the group in a leadership exercise. Together they created an all encompassing drawing which portrayed the many characteristics of an effective leader. The August conference includes nine second-level students who will enjoy new activities and discussions to provide an advanced level of leadership exploration.

The annual conference, lead by teachers Pat Therault and Sue Clark, is an opportunity for students to learn about leadership and practice teamwork skills in a fun and motivating manner. The SLC students begin their school-year efforts by arranging and carrying out a fun day of Getting to Know You activities in September to welcome new and returning students to campus. It is an event the student body looks forward to each and every year.

The Glenholme School, a Devereux Center, is an exceptional boarding school for students with special needs, which offers an individually prescribed learning environment with a steadfast academic curriculum. Using our effective individualized services, we apply a positive behavior support model focused on development of social skills and lifelong strategies for success. The school’s milieu therapy addresses varying levels of academic, social and special needs development in boys and girls ages 10-18 and postgraduates. We prepare graduates for continued education in traditional day schools, boarding schools, colleges and universities.
