Washington, CT - Students at the Glenholme School wrote from their hearts as they took part in the Laws of Life essay program held in January. This program encourages students to reflect and write about the values they believe will aid them to live successful and productive lives. Students participate in the essay contest as part of their community service program. Kathleen Grove coordinated the contest and the essays were evaluated by a panel of judges that included Brian Stanley, Allison Michaud, Rachel Murray, and Christopher Thompson.

Rebecca D, Diego M, Mike F, Jake, Daniel G, and Nicole P were the authors of this year’s top essays. While all essay writers were recognized at a formal dinner held at the school, the top essayists were awarded a special trip to dine at their favorite restaurant, The Olive Garden, to celebrate their distinguished achievement in mid-March.

“The Laws of Life writing program has been a most effective tool in assisting the students on reflection and thought. Community service is a big part of our school and this gives each student the opportunity to give back to someone on a personal level in their own way.” said Kathleen Grove. “It was amazing to see each student grow as an individual and become more aware of the positive influence a person can be,” said Allison Michaud.

Among the topics the students wrote about were learning a lesson the hard way, values they want to pass on to future generations, love, being thankful, and remembrance. Mike Fitzgerald’s essay entitled, “Laws of Life 2010: Values I Want to Pass On,” has been submitted to the School for Ethical Education (SEE) to be entered into the statewide contest. Students whose essays were selected as the top essays in the statewide competition will be honored at an awards ceremony in the spring.

The Laws of Life Essay Contest was created by Sir John Templeton in 1987 and has spread throughout the United States to more than 30 countries.
