Washington, CT - Every September, being a leader is an important job for the members of the Student Leadership Conference, SLC, at Devereux Glenholme. The SLC commenced in June with the mission to instill leadership qualities and effective team-building skills among its members and ultimately for them to positively influence the student body. The members, comprised of a cross-section of the student population, participated in regular meetings, exercises, and special events designed to improve student awareness and create a more positive community environment.

As a final exercise for the SLC, the group plans and hosts an afternoon of activities designed to make new students feel welcome. Planning the Getting to Know You activities is an essential learning opportunity for the young leaders who studied leadership over the summer. The event took place on September 30 and the SLC members engaged their chance to put their learning into practice, as they paired up with one of the new students and together visit booths arranged throughout the schoolhouse and gymnasium. At these booths, a faculty member provided information and answered questions about one aspect of the program. Topics included Cottage Life, Health and Fitness Opportunities, the Behavior Program, Evening Activities and Programs, and the Commons.

For the second year, Getting to Know You was a success in welcoming new students, making them feel comfortable in the program, and introducing them to the key people on campus. Watch for more great news from the SLC as it continues to make positive strides at Devereux Glenholme.
