Washington, CT - The Devereux Glenholme summer session experienced a few rare occurrences of the popular Parents’ Weekend Auction item, “Head of School.” On these special days, Glenholme experiences an exchange of power as the new head of school sets the rules for the day. Certainly not for the fainthearted, the head of school position requires a special touch of seriousness, a sense of humor, and lots of energy and enthusiasm.

The two students who stepped in as Glenholme’s Head of School during August were required to use an extra touch of creativity. Andrew R. governed Glenholme on August 13 and Rebecca C. held the helm as Head of School on August 19; they both employed their powers and abilities effectively. The special summer session head of school rules included late starts, a relaxation of the school attire policy, student luncheons, special sporting events, afternoon movie viewings, extra re-enforcers, go-kart test drives, and cottage dinner parties. Governing Glenholme is not without business meetings, student conferences, and important phone calls and the aide of the executive golf cart assisted them in meeting those important obligations.

The “Head of School” is a time-honored custom of Glenholme. The staff and students walk a little lighter in anticipation of the day when the new Head of School governs Glenholme.

Devereux Glenholme is an exceptional boarding school for students with special needs, which offers an individually prescribed learning environment with a steadfast academic curriculum. Using our effective individualized services, we apply a positive behavior support model focused on development of social skills and lifelong strategies for success. The school’s milieu therapy addresses varying levels of academic, social and special needs development in boys and girls ages 10-18 and postgraduates.
