West Deptford, NJ - The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution to honor and recognize direct support professionals during the week of September 14, 2009. Devereux is very excited to join the nation in honoring our wonderful residential counselors, night attendants, recreational aides, program aides and program supervisors who support our consumers in community-based living.
There is a way that everyone can help to support these individuals and ensure that Devereux and other providers are able to offer improved wages in the future...
On Tuesday, September 15, join the “Call on Congress” to support H.R. 868!
Join thousands of Direct Support Professionals, self-advocates and family members as we “Call on Congress” on Tuesday, September 15. Members of Congress listen to YOU— their constituents— take advantage of your position of power! Call and talk to them about the need for better wages for community residential DSPs. Flood the telephone lines and secure their support for the Direct Support Professional Fairness and Security Act, H.R. 868.
What is H.R. 868?
The Supreme Court’s Olmstead decision reaffirmed the goal and vision of Devereux NJ and so many supporters of people with disabilities—to provide life in the community for people with disabilities. Unfortunately, community based organizations like Devereux struggle to compete with wages offered by public employers. In order to make this vision a reality, reform is needed in the way that states and providers are funded by Medicaid to deliver these services. Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-CA) and Congressman Lee Terry (R-NE) drafted H.R. 868, a bill that takes an important step forward by joining federal, state and private sectors together to address this critical issue and ensure that there are resources available to attract, reward and retain qualified direct support professionals.
