Developing a positive school climate is Glenholme Executive Director, Maryann Campbell, who shared a special moment with student, Brandon K. in the spring of 2009.
Washington, CT - The Glenholme School has associated with the Center for the 4th and 5th Rs since the late 1990s when we were refining our Communities of Characterę program. Their guidance and insight has helped us integrate character development into all aspects of our program. Researchers have visited the campus to help us self-evaluate and plan for the future. The faculty and students have discussed issues surrounding good character, a healthy school climate and how each person can influence the culture of the school. We have expanded our program and made many changes as a result of these conversations.

For the first time this year, a parent survey was available (Collective Responsibility for Excellence and Ethics developed by The Smart and Good Schools initiative at The Center for the 4th and 5th Rs). This survey was about the climate of the school with particular attention to ethics and excellence. Data was collected and analyzed by the researchers at Smart and Good Schools and they have provided useful information. For example, we noted with pride the very high ratings the parents gave on School Focus on Excellence and Ethics. We are pleased that parents know we are keeping their children safe and teaching them to act responsibly. We also noted some areas we want to improve in the future.

Several parents have been invited to join a work group to help analyze the results and make recommendations for improvements. Part of our vision is to surround our students with people of character in a safe and nurturing community. The parent work group will play a key role in helping us maintain excellence and grow even further.
