Rutland, MA - Achieving success in school is one of the most difficult tasks for many students who come to Devereux Massachusetts. So, when 12 students completed all their academic requirements for high school graduation this year, teachers, students, staff and parents were understandably thrilled.

On June 12, 2009, Devereux held a graduation ceremony to present high school diplomas to the 12 students. With family, friends and the Devereux staff cheering them on, the students proudly marched into the school gymnasium wearing their caps and gowns for the ceremony.

Senator Steve Brewer, guest speaker, praised the students for their hard work and commitment. He offered inspiring words of encouragement for their futures, whether it be pursuing a vocation or continuing their education.

In addition to their academic achievements, these students were celebrating the attainment of treatment goals, having overcome significant behavioral and emotional difficulties. Some of the student spoke about the obstacles they overcame to achieve this success. The very proud valedictorian talked about how he never gave up on his goal of “reaching beyond the stars.”

“It was a very satisfying experience to share with these students and their families,” said Sherry Lynn MacNeil, Director of Education. “We were very pleased to honor the students’ hard work, as well as the effort of our staff who helped get them to this turning point in their lives.”
