Washington, CT - During the spring, Devereux-Glenholme’s Community Service Coordinator, Kay Grove, and staff member, Katie Platt, provided six students with an exciting education adventure in Philadelphia. Their weekend trip incorporated historical sight-seeking, community service and Phillies fun.

The historical segment encompassed the many landmarks which make Philadelphia a popular attraction. The travelers visited the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the Constitution Center; stopping along the way to partake the beauty of the city, learn the important historical facts and take some photographs.

The students earned community service time by removing invasive species and planting trees with the Wissahickon Restoration volunteers. They also volunteered at the Philadelphia Zoo’s Earth Day celebration, where they assisted in educating children from the community about Earth preservation, recycling and building amphibian habitats.

A trip to historical Philadelphia is not complete without experiencing a baseball game with the 2008 World Series Champions, the Philadelphia Phillies. The trip was a great success and the travelers expressed much enthusiasm about the entire experience.

Devereux Glenholme is an exceptional boarding school for students with special needs, which offers an individually prescribed learning environment with a steadfast academic curriculum. Using our effective individualized services, we apply a positive behavior support model focused on development of social skills and lifelong strategies for success. The school’s milieu therapy addresses varying levels of academic, social and special needs development in boys and girls ages 10-18 and postgraduates. We prepare graduates for continued education in traditional day schools, boarding schools, colleges and universities.
