Washington, CT - In late March, Maryann Campbell, Dr. Patrick Queenan, Judy Cooper and Katie Mahoney traveled to sunny California to meet with 30 of Glenholme’s west coast parents. While the school coordinates monthly parent seminars on campus, it is obviously difficult for west coast parents to make that trip. This parent retreat provides the opportunity for Glenholme staff to deliver several parent seminars, provide in-home consultations and bring families and staff together in a mutually beneficial exchange.

The parent seminars, whether on campus or on the road, provide valuable information and support for families. Katie Mahoney, a Glenholme social worker, afforded in-home consultations to several of the California families. In-home consultations help translate the Glenholme milieu to the home and make home visits for the students more successful and treatment from the program more consistent.

While a number of parent participation objectives are achieved during this retreat, the main intention was to close the geographical gap and make our west coast parents feel more a part of the school. Essential connections were made between the parents and the school, as well as between the families, particularly with the addition of the west coast directorate including Darla Quinton and David Russell, to our current Glenholme Planning and Development Board.

Many new parents are part of the west coast contingency and the vibrant discussions during the retreat incorporated the program, the students and Glenholme’s future. With such a large population of California families, this annual road trip is warranted. The time devoted to families, especially those who are long distance, is always welcome and beneficial.

Devereux Glenholme is an exceptional boarding school for students with special needs, which offers an individually prescribed learning environment with a steadfast academic curriculum.
