Despite the snow storm that shut down most of the east coast on March 2nd, we had over 20 readers come out to read to the students during Devereux Kanner’s Reading Week. This week-long special event, now in its sixth year, grew from the National Education Association National Read Across America Day. Kanner joined with more than 45 million readers in celebrating this special occasion, bringing together children, books and community friends.

Building on the Kanner Learning Center Student Council’s “Going Green” initiative, many of the books this year focused on the environment. Books included, "Big Bang!" by Carolyn Cinami Decristofano and Michael Carroll, "Curious George Takes a Job" by H. A. Rey, "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss, "Olivia" by Ian Falconer, and "Why Are the Ice Caps Melting? The Dangers of Global Warming" by Anne Rockwell. As always, the children were excited and inquisitive - the books sparked their interest and led to many interesting, in-depth conversations about how to live more “green.”

The children, adolescents and staff of the Devereux Kanner Center would like to extend their sincere thanks to all of the reading week participants for joining them on their adventure of reading, which opened the door to new ideas, unexplored worlds and endless possibilities.
