Washington, CT - The Devereux Glenholme School gears up for a new robotics program with For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology ( FIRST). The Glenholme Robotics Team kicked off their FIRST Technical Challenge ( FTC), with a crew of 10 high school age students on Saturday, September 13. This “sport for the mind” combines the excitement of sports with the intellectual challenge of science and technology.

The FTC competition level requires the Glenholme Robotics Team to utilize a variety of academic and social skills. The fabrication of the robot encompasses engineering, animation and design. The creation of a team logo, costumes and trading buttons will challenge their art and design capabilities, while the presentation and public speaking portion will test their language arts abilities. The FTC is also set on a tight timeline, requiring the team to develop efficiency and effectiveness. Lastly, the competition exposure will instill graciousness, professionalism and teamwork.

Competition begins in January 2009 and culminates in June 2009 under the Georgia Dome. The Glenholme School’s community of faculty, staff, students, parents and contributors gear up for the excitement of robotics and the new possibilities this program opens for the school.
The Glenholme Robotics Team is seeking mentors from the community to join in the excitement. Industrial arts instructors and engineers with mechanical, electrical and programming backgrounds, who are interested in sharing their passion for science and technology, are welcome. Contact Devereux Glenholme’s Human Resources Department for volunteer forms.

The Glenholme School is an exceptional learning environment for young people with special needs.
