New Jersey - On July 9, 2008, Maureen Walsh, executive director of the Devereux New Jersey Treatment Network, was awarded the EP Maxwell J. Schleifer Distinguished Service Award. This award, named after the founder and former editor-in-chief of Exceptional Parent Magazine, is awarded to an individual who has displayed remarkable accomplishments and dedication in the care and advocacy of individuals with disabilities/under difficult circumstances. Walsh’s dedication to the disabled and special needs community was recognized during a pre-game ceremony held at Waterfront Park, home of the Trenton Thunders Minor League Baseball team.

Walsh joined Devereux in 1982, where she began developing community-based programs for individuals with special needs in Chester and Delaware counties in Pennsylvania. She later assumed a leadership role (executive director) with the Devereux Pennsylvania Kanner Center, located in West Chester, PA. Walsh has served as executive director of Devereux New Jersey for ten years overseeing community based operations supporting over 400 children, adolescents, adults and their families with special needs, from outside the New York skyline to the southern New Jersey shoreline. Individuals with emotional, behavioral and developmental disabilities are served via a broad spectrum of treatment settings including community-based homes and apartments, vocational training programs, family care homes and consulting services. Devereux New Jersey also has a residential/educational/vocational center that serves individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

Both Devereux and EP Global Communications, Inc., publisher of Exceptional Parent magazine, share the same mission of advocacy and support in order to improve the lives of individuals with special needs and disabilities. EP Global Communications, Inc. is a 36-year old award winning publishing and communications company that provides practical advice and emotional support to families of children and adults with disabilities and special healthcare needs, as well as the physicians, allied healthcare and educational professionals who are involved in their care and development.

The award presentation was part of Exceptional Parent’s Disability Awareness Night, a national program that is intended to increase awareness and support for the 54.6 million Americans living with intellectual or physical disabilities. Disability Awareness Night began in the summer of 2002 when Exceptional Parent Magazine combined forces with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox to create the first event of its kind.

Devereux is a national 501(c) (3) organization and contributions are entirely tax-deductible. For more information, please visit http://www.devereuxnj.org/.
