Washington, CT - The Devereux Glenholme School observed Earth Day this year. Earth Day is when millions of people worldwide participate in events to show their concern for the planet's environment and natural resources.

As a part of an ongoing, campus-wide effort, the Glenholme School has been implementing a “green campaign” to reduce, renew and reuse. Efforts are underway by the students and the staff to reduce consumption and waste, to clean up areas, inside and out, and to recycle whenever possible. Campus supervisors are taking students on clean up walks on and off campus. One group recently embarked on an “observation walk,” to take note of things that could be harmful to the environment and to come up with solutions to those problems.

To cap off Earth Day, the students and staff held a tree planting ceremony outside the schoolhouse. The graduating class of 2008 took turns shoveling dirt around the roots of the flowering pear tree. Student Council members read a poem and sang a song in honor of Earth Day. The tree will be a symbolic reminder of the continuing efforts of the Glenholme community to improve the environment.

On May 1, the Student Council held a carnation sale for the Glenholme community. The proceeds for the flower sale will benefit the Arbor Day Foundation.

The Devereux Glenholme School is a specialized boarding school on over 100 acres in the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut that provides a therapeutic program and exceptional learning environment to address varying levels of academic, social and emotional development in boys and girls ages 10-18. Glenholme’s goal is to prepare its graduates for continued education in traditional schools, boarding schools, colleges and universities.
