Devereux California Introduces Early Childhood, Resilience-Building Resources during Resilience Conference

Devereux California was proud to partner with The University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) Early Childhood Care & Education Services and the Pacific Coast Association for the Education of Young Children to host “Promoting Resilience” on March 1, 2013.  Held at the UCSB West Conference Center, the event featured a presentation about building children’s resilience by Linda Likins, the National Director of the Devereux Early Childhood Initiative.

“We had to cap our attendance for this conference at 50, which we thought was a great turnout,” said Amy Evans, Executive Director of Devereux California. Conference attendees included Early Childhood professionals including teachers, mental health specialists, and program managers and directors from across Santa Barbara County.  While Devereux California serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and emotional disorders, Evans wants to make the most of the resources Devereux has to offer, including cutting-edge research and programs produced by the Devereux Center for Resilient Children (DCRC).  Comprised of professionals in early childhood education and mental health, DCRC’s mission is to promote the social and emotional health of all children.

While DCRC primarily focuses upon promoting resilience in children, resilience, Likins says, is for everyone. It is very difficult to promote resilience in children if their adult caregivers are not resilient themselves.  “We all want young children to be successful, but for many children, particularly those at high risk, life’s challenges can be overwhelming. To overcome obstacles, they need protective factors that guard against risk and adversity,” she said.  During her presentation, Likins provided participants with the Devereux Early Childhood Assessments for infants, toddlers and preschoolers in addition to an Adult Resilience Survey, advancing the idea further that resilience is a life tool that can help everyone at any stage of life.

To organize the conference, Evans teamed with Leslie Voss, Director of UCSB Early Childhood Center. The goal of the collaboration, explains Evans, was to introduce Devereux to the early childhood community in Santa Barbara.  “I think it is a great model for other centers—to bring a high level of expertise to our local Devereux communities,” said Evans.
